Notting Hill

Step 1

Check out where Notting is situated in London and decide which tube station you should get off at in order to walk to Portobello Market. Use the maps from the list of links :) .

-Adress: Notting Hill, Paddington, Greater London W11 1, UK

Northwest of London

-Tube stations to walk from: Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park, Notting Hill Gate

Step 2

Imagine you`re on a course trip in London You`re supposed to be meeting Mrs B. in a place called 202 in Notting Hill. Find out what it is, where it is and what you can do there. Would you like it there? Why? Why not?

-202 is an international restaurant near Westbourne Grove. You can have different kind of meals.Main courses and light meals are both offered.I would like it there as it looks comfortable and like a cute small café.

Step 3

Collect some information about Portobello Market. When would be the best time to go there? Any ideas for purchases? Also try to find some photos.

-Go there on Saturday morning to get the most out of it (and the biggest crowd around you…:)
It is about 2 miles long. Fruits, vegetables, fashion and antiques are offered. I would like to search for some new clothes there and try different kinds of food.

Adress:
Portobello Road
72 Tavistock Road
London

Step 4

Your teacher is very fond of London and would like to buy a one-bedroom flat in Notting Hill. Check real estate websites to find out what price range we`re talking about.

-Price Range: £250,000 at least.

-One Bedroom Offer:

Step 5

Watch the initial scene of the popular 90s film Notting Hill starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. How is Notting Hill presented by the protagonist/voice-over? Take notes.

-Notting Hill is presented as a place filled with alot of different people from every class and country.Alot of different stores are there and the protagonist knows alot of people, describing everybody having a certain idiosyncrasy.

Step 6

On seeing the opening sequence once more, please pay special attention to the way people are presented. Is there anything that strikes you as being particularly British? Again, please take notes.

-British people seem to be calm and friendly.

Somehow, they seem all a little comical,as well. For example the barber which makes people look like a blue haired poodle or the man which doesn’t remember why he did a certain tattoo and what it stands for.Their special character makes them funny.

Step 7

William`s bookshop is not a very successful business. How does he deal with this situation? Google English-understatement and English-modesty and apply your results to the scene.

-William is not getting annoyed or angry about it.He just takes the situation very easy and his assistant does that, too. The special thing is that William even makes a parody out of his bad situation and makes it look funny, although he is in a real trouble. He talks polite about everything.

It is said that british people typically handle like this. They take everything easy and even make fun out of themselves many times, doesn’t matter how hard the situation is.

Another strong british habit is to stay polite in every situation, even if you hate someone, you talk nicely.
